Biography
Dr. Martha (Marti) Kubik is a professor in the School of Nursing. She received her B.S.N. from Hampton University and a M.S.N. from the University of Pennsylvania, with a focus on primary care and preparation as an adult nurse practitioner. She earned a Ph.D. in behavioral epidemiology from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Dr. Kubik has a long history of extramural-funded research as a principal or co-investigator, with a focus on youth and families and low-income and minority populations. She is nationally recognized in the field of childhood obesity prevention and has made important contributions to the evidence base on the multifactorial and multilevel influences that contribute to energy imbalance and overweight and obesity among children and youth. Her work on advancing the understanding of the school food environment has informed school nutrition policy at national and international levels. Other research examines the role of school nursing in obesity prevention. She has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is a past standing member of the NIH Community-Level Health Promotion Study Section. Dr. Kubik is an experienced nurse educator and preceptor, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in the classroom, community-based clinical and research settings, and international fieldwork experiences in Central and South America.
Dr. Kubik has more than 20 years of primary care clinical experience as an advanced practice nurse and certified nurse practitioner serving youth and their families in a variety of health care settings, including a federally qualified health center, college health center, and a community-based adolescent health clinic. In 2018, Kubik was appointed to a four-year term as a member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

2019-2020: Vaux Violence Prevention in North Philadelphia. PA Commission on Crime and Delinquency. Aim To prevent/reduce violence and violence associated outcomes among high school students attending an inner city high school, using trauma informed strategies. Funded Projects
2013-2020: Principal Investigator. School nurse-directed secondary obesity prevention for elementary school children. NIH/NINR (R01). Aim: To test a school-based, school nurse-directed healthy weight management program that aims to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity among 8 to 12 year old children.
2013-2016: Co-Investigator. Improving Rural High School Breakfast Environments NIH/NHLBI (R01). (Nanney, PI). Aim: To expand and promote the school breakfast program and test impact upon student participation rates, diet, body mass index and percent body fat in a random sample of high school students in 16 rural Minnesota school districts.
2011-2016: Co-Investigator. Evaluating Impacts of School Policies and Student Diet and Activity Behaviors and Obesity. NIH/NICHD (R01). (Nanney, PI). Aim: To conduct a school- focused obesity prevention policy evaluation linking existing state and national data.
2010-2016: Co-Investigator. Healthy Home Offerings via the Mealtime Environment (HOME) Plus. NIH/NIDDK (R01). (Fulkerson, PI). Aim: To test the efficacy of a family-based obesity prevention program with families of school-age children that targets family meal environment and sedentary behavior.
