Her research focus is primarily on older adults with declined health who are vulnerable to losing autonomy and dignity. When older adults’ physical and/or cognitive abilities are significantly deteriorated, their right to make decisions and right to be treated with respect is easily threatened. Her research seeks ways to avoid these unfortunate situations and to support vulnerable older adults. Dr. Inoue brings her extensive clinical experience as a social worker and a registered nurse to her understanding of these research areas. She received her Ph.D. from Boston College (Graduate School of Social Work), MSW from Washington University in St. Louis (Brown School of Social Work), BSW from Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare in Japan (Department of Medical Social Welfare), and ADN from Kyushu University in Japan (College of Medical Technology Department of Nursing).

Community Service

Associate Editor, Journal of Gerontological Social Work, 2020-Present

Council Member, Fairfax Area Long Term Care Coordinating Council, 2018-Present

International Liaison, Gerontological Society of America, 2016-Present

Board Member, Japanese Bostonian Support Line (JB Line, Inc.), 2012-Present

Research

Research Interests

End-of-life issues: Advance care planning and grief process

Patients’ autonomy and dignity in health care settings

Personalized music intervention for dementia

Publications

# Co-author was an undergraduate student at the time of the writing of the manuscript
*Co-author was a graduate student at the time of the writing of the manuscript

Amano, T., Hooley, C., Strong, J., & Inoue, M.
